Everything I’ve consumed of late spoke to why creative types succeed. You may remember a couple months back when everything I liked spoke to how creative types deal with failure. I thought then what I’m thinking now: If the universe and my reading and viewing habits group everything good into one theme, I should share that theme with you.

So everything here will concern why certain storytellers get what they dream of, so you can see the path toward what you want.

Sit with the scary: Tim Dillon’s a brash, gay comedian from Long Island who tells scathing stories about his days as an adjustable-rate mortgage broker just before the 2008 market crash. YouTube’s feeding me a lot of his podcast appearances and bits these days, and this week I watched him interview Joe Rogan.

They cover a lot of ground and, as always, I don’t agree with everything Rogan says. But because Dillon is younger and trying to figure out how he might succeed as Rogan has, he flat out asks Joe how he’s done it.

Rogan’s response is fascinating. You’ll want to start around the 58-minute mark to watch for yourself, but Joe said he grew up in a broken home, and moved around too much to build any lasting…

Sit with what scares you, Rogan says, and eventually it won’t. That’s when you truly succeed.
